Woman Unknown, directed by May el-Toukhy, won the Golden Lion at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival on 12 September. The official awards list identifies the film as a production involving Denmark, Sweden and Latvia.

The jury, chaired by Maggie Gyllenhaal, selected the winners from the main competition. Lee Chang-dong's Possible Love received the Grand Jury Prize, giving another major award to an Asian filmmaker within the international programme. The results bring attention to works developed across different national production systems and to the continuing role of festivals in connecting films with global audiences. An award is the decision of a particular jury; it should not be presented as an objective ranking of every film released during the year.
