An operation against environmental crime in Latin America and the Caribbean resulted in 233 arrests, INTERPOL announced on 7 October. Operation Madre Tierra VIII ran from 1 June to 31 July and involved authorities in nine countries.
Investigators recovered more than 1,000 animals and uncovered illegal land clearing affecting around 60,000 hectares, according to the organisation. The action connects conservation with cross-border law enforcement, addressing activities that can damage ecosystems while generating illicit income. The October date is the release of the results, not the start of the operation. The reported arrests should also be distinguished from convictions: further investigations and judicial proceedings determine individual criminal responsibility.
